Fun Stuff to Do When Camping

Camping in the great outdoors. It’s an all-American past-time during the summer months. However, once you’ve driven several hours, set up camp and fed everyone, they may just look at you and say, “Now what?” With no Internet, video games or television to entertain campers, you will want to be prepared with several activities to help everyone enjoy their surroundings and appreciate the beauty of camping.

Fun Stuff to Do When Camping

Hiking

Grab the kids and head down the trail for some serious immersion in nature. Check your map for hiking trails, or find a guide book that will tell you the length and difficulty of the hike. Make sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks. Plan to take rest breaks frequently if the elevation is high or the trail is steep.

Fishing

Find a nearby pond, lake or river and bring your fishing pole along. Even if the fish aren’t biting, the conversation can be just as good. You’ll want to check on regulations for the area, and purchase a fishing license if needed before casting your line. If you’re in luck, you may enjoy some fresh trout for your dinner.

Campfire Fun

Nothing says camping like that delicious combination of graham crackers, chocolate and toasty-warm marshmallows. Making s’mores around the campfire is great fun and delicious, too. Bring along your guitar and sing songs. Tell stories. Your kids will love to hear about the fun times you had as a kid, and you can all feel a shiver down your spines when someone tells a good ghost story.

Scavenger Hunt

Make up a scavenger hunt list of items that you can find near your camping spot. Give each camper a small paper bag and send them out to search. Organizing into teams of two or more is a good idea, and make sure that no one strays too far from camp.

Arts in the Wilderness

Arts in the Wilderness

Surrounded by the beauty of nature, you may feel compelled to write about your environment. Find a quiet spot and bring your notebook and pencil. If writing isn’t your thing, try sketching or painting. Photography is another art form that is popular in wilderness spots. If you are camping with kids, get them involved in a family project–perhaps a mural or collage.
